Theme
Level up oral and written communication skills in discussing important and meaningful topics in economics and
business in English

Goals
(1) Students will be able to think, analyze, write, explain, and discuss current and meaningful topics in
economics and business as well as interesting social topics in English.
(2) Students will be able to understand in English what the teacher, students, and other people write and explain.
(3) Students will become accustomed to listening, reading, and understanding what the teacher explains in
spoken and written English.
【授業の概要】
Summary

The primary focus is on conducting the class entirely in English. We will discuss current issues, news, and topics of
interest to economic and business students. The emphasis is on using English in the real world. University students
have the exciting opportunity to learn in a natural English language environment. There will be regular opportunities
for communication in weekly assignments. The teacher will provide weekly feedback to students to guide and
encourage them in active learning and teaching. The main goal is to build students' confidence to make consistent
efforts to learn, practice, and reflect on using English as a tool for communication.

Weekly Schedule

This plan may be adjusted on the first day of class. The order of the weekly focus may change.
The consistent focus will be on how to use English to have written and oral discussions about business
and economic related current topics and issues.

The outline below gives a sample of the types of skills and topics that will be covered during the term.
The skills will be reviewed and recycled with new materials.

第 1回 Introduction to the class rules, content, teacher, and students

第 2回 Weekly focus: Following instructions.

第 3回 Weekly focus: Answering the questions asked.

第 4回 Weekly focus: Proper format to arrange answers (e.g. paragraph organization).

第 5回 Weekly focus: Basic grammar for natural English communication.

第 6回 Weekly focus: Basic spelling for natural English communication.

第 7回 Weekly focus: Basic vocabulary for natural English communication.

第 8回 Weekly focus: Organization of an introduction in a paragraph.

第 9回 Weekly focus: Organization of the body to explain the main point.

第10回 Weekly focus: Organization of the conclusion to give deeper meaning.

第11回 Weekly focus: Structure of a paragraph in three parts.

第12回 Weekly focus: Expression of original and unique ideas.

第13回 Weekly focus: Story telling of experience and learning.
 
第14回 Preparation for Final Test part 1: review all skills.

第15回 Preparation for Final Test part 2: continue to check understanding.

No required textbook. Students and teacher will decide suitable materials.

成績評価の方法と基準
Evaluation

80% quality and improvement of weekly assignments submitted on time, 20% final report.
Regular attendance and participation will also be considered in the final grade.

Remarks (including when teaching online)

The teacher will give advice on how to preview and review the materials presented.

When teaching this class online, students will be required to read and understand the
assignments that are uploaded to Ono-Po. There are instructions, research tasks, and
discussion questions for students to do. Reports and answers are submitted to Ono-Po.
The teacher will give students weekly feedback. Students are expected to check and read
the teacher's comments and messages. In addition, sometimes, there will be
Zoom discussion meetings to provide students with valuable communication opportunities
to meet the teacher and classmates. We will exchange ideas and learn from each other
through English communication. We will also check the answers of the assignments
to make sure students understand the tasks. Email the teacher if students have questions
or other messages.
